Who You Are

It’s never too late to be who you might have been. – George Eliot, English novelist (1819 – 1880)

This quote was left for me on a turn-down service provided by a hotel. It got me thinking about who you are supposed to be and who you are.

For example. When we got the cats, they were kittens. When I picked Roxie from the shelter, she was always spastic and crazy. When I picked her up she immediately started playing with my earrings and she had poop on her tail (a hazard of the otherwise really cute Bob tails). And today. She still loves to bel picked up, she still goes crazy for toys and she still occasionally gets poop in her tail She has always had the same personality and always knew who she was.

Jean-Claude, however, was another story. His name from the shelter was Tiny because they thought he was the runt of the litter. As a matter of fact, Jean-Claude and Roxie weighed almost the same amount. However, within one month Jean-Claude went from four pounds to six pounds. He increased his body weight by 50% in a month! However, the vet wasn’t concerned as Jean-Claude was also growing. So the shelter had it wrong. Jean-Claude, who has settled into a 15 pound solid cat very large cat with his super long tail, wasn’t the runt of the litter. He merely had to move himself to the right conditions to succeed and become the cat he always was. Those conditions of success for him being the love and support of three crazy women (Roxie included).

I was a mix. I’ve always had my own beat and been different, but didn’t really accept or embrace it until later.

What conditions do you need to become who you want to be? We all need love and support. One of the hardest things to do in life is to cut out people who are not adding anything to our lives. Maybe they aren’t detracting from our life, but if they aren’t adding anything, do we need them to just take up the space? The older I get, the more I realize that I have such wonderful, positive people in my corner. People I love and people who love me without condition.

Who do you want to become? Are you living the life you imagined? Are you fulfilling your purpose in life? While these are questions that we see all the time, you can never remind yourself of these lessons in life enough.

Because I got high…

So many of you know that we let Jean-Claude and occasionally Roxie roam our respective backyards. Jean-Claude now demands to be let out and even knows that the sound of the trash bag being changed usually means the door opens. We usually let JC out more than Roxie b/c JC will actually come back when called and although he can be naughty at times, will generally come back within an hour. He can even knock on the door. Roxie, well, Roxie is special and that is why we love h At times, JC can be, shall we say insistent, that he be allowed out. At my house I’ve seen even more of that behavior and I think I understand why.

JC is an addict and needs to get his buzz on.

I’m a container gardener and in one of those containers, I’ve been growing catnip. For the longest time, JC was completely uninterested in it. However, there were several neighborhood cats that would hop the fence and munch on my stash. Due to the rash of warm weather that we’ve been having, I’ve been letting him run the yard. For awhile, because my gate was broken, he could easily explore and roam the neighborhood, but he would always come back when called. Then after the gate, his explorations were limited the 120 sq I have or so.

Then I crushed up a leaf of fresh catnip from my container. JC loved it. He went over to the plant and started munching. Then roaming, then munching, then roaming, then munching. He loves it. For those that don’t know, catnip really does give cats a buzz. Afterwards, he did what I call the catnip roll when they have the good buzz and rolled on the walkway.

I’ve given the cats dried catnip, but this is the first time I’ve seen either one of them eat it fresh. JC then proceeded to climb the tree in my yard where he watched the world for a bit. Then he went back to the catnip and had some more!

When I left him this morning, he settled in for a long nap. He had thoroughly cleaned himself, positioned himself just so on the bed. Sweet dreams JC!

Taking Time for Yourself

Happy New Year! The cats are safely ensconced at my house as Azeena said. They have been with me for a week and a half since Christmas Day! Azeena brought them out where they promptly said we are mad at you CCL. You left us. You didn’t visit us, you didn’t play in the garden with us. That next week was touch and go. Jean-Claude slept in the basement. Roxie only consented to spend part of the time with me and neither cat really acted like they wanted to be bothered.

Then as the only truism that applies to every situation good or bad – this too shall pass. It passed. They became used to my house. They had a new big litter box. They found solace on the bed while I slept.

They relearned that they can go watch the world from a second story deck. Roxie learned that she had new plants to pee in (which she likes the actual dirt). And now in my house we have a routine. They’ve adopted.

So every year we see a cycle. The new year starts and people roll out new promises – to lose weight, quit smoking, be better to your fellow man. Most of those are already broken by now. I stopped making resolutions at new year’s awhile back. Today is the day to start the rest of your life. Not some arbitrary date. I can understand the appeal though. But today we are going to push forward and leave what was in the past the past. We’ll carry the lessons forward.

With the new year also comes new spam. I received the following spam message. I found it hilarious and I hope you do as well!

FREE JC & Roxie!!!

I have no excuse for not blogging. I really don’t, other than a lot has been going on with me in my life. Holidays always seem to be a time of transition and reflection. Many people are sad about the holidays but if we remember a few things such as no matter what, we are alive. We are here and tomorrow does not have to be yesterday. In fact, today does not have to be yesterday. Too many people get trapped in the commercialism of the holidays and forget what truly makes this time of year special. Today, let’s take some time to reach out to those family and friends and take a moment to truly connect with them. Tell them you miss them, tell them you are thinking about them, tell them you love them.

So on to this blog title. Free JC & Roxie! Both have now been at Azeena’s house even though I have been home and off the road. She keeps pushing back their transfer date. I’ve now officially given up custody but still retain hope that they will come back to my house. However, they love Azeena and Azeena loves them. At some point we’ll work out a custody agreement although my version of custody means either they stay at one house and the other person visits. 🙂

Don’t Wake a Man Out of His Sleep

Azeena mentioned this before, but when I went to her house to get the cats I stayed for a bit. I like to do this to give them a chance to “forgive” me for leaving them. Well last time I was there and got caught up in an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent so I was there for a while. So long that Jean-Claude who was awake when I walked in was under Azeena’s bed asleep.

If you’ve been reading this blog for a long time then you can tell that Roxie is the one who is prissy and JC just goes with the flow. But this time it was different. Jean-Claude was so upset that he ran and hid, presumably to go back to sleep. So if you try to find a black cat in all of the crevices of a house you can imagine my frustration. So I just took Roxie and went back later to fetch le chat noir. And sure enough on the next go round he was eager to hop in the crate.

My male friends immediately jumped to JC’s defense and reminded me – never wake a man out of his sleep. I guess for JC the process of dealing with all of the females in his life he needs his downtime. As you can see he is not the same wonderful happy JC when you wake him up!

So my lesson was regardless of species, let that man sleep and you’ll have a much happier household!
