Love Me Hard…All Night Long

For those that are regular readers of this blog, you’ve probably noticed two things. First, yes, it has been a long long time since I, CCL, have blogged. This is a direct result of too much work, too much travel (for work, which stopped being cool after year two. I’m now on year five) and not enough rest.
The second is that when the cats come back to my house Ms. Roxie often keeps me up all night long. She meows with such sorrow and melancholy and runs across me every hour. Then, once she gets tired around 6 or 6:30, she stretches out on the edge of the bed and falls asleep. Well, due to a congruence of events, the cats were alone for a period of week and I brought them back to my house.

That first night, Roxie didn’t meow at all night. Instead she bit me – hard. On my nose, on my chin. Now if you don’t have cats, these are actually called love bites and not all cats do it. Roxie has done it before but never with such frequency and never so hard. She loved me hard all night long. It was her way of showing how happy she was to see me and that she was snuggling with me.
Jean-Claude just rubbed against me and slept on the porch. He was happy to see me, but in true JC fashion was just cool about it.

With Roxie I’ve learned that in order for me to get a good night’s sleep two things have to happen. Since she’s a light sleeper, during the day she can’t go into those deep sleeps that cats get. Also, she needs good solid play. I have to make her run up and down the stairs for about ½ hr for her to get worn out. Even with this, it’s a 50/50 shot if I’m going to make it through the night.
I might have to start keeping her up even more during the day. Anyone have any other suggestions?

So now…

I’m up to 2.5 cats. Cats are interesting creatures. I miss JC and Roxie. Azeena has had to keep them b/c I’ve been working like a mad woman. I have gone to visit them, but they are clearly giving me the message, we’re through with you. However, now I have a cat that I feed. The cat actually belongs to the neighbors but he comes and goes and now waits for me on my porch. He meows at me and waits for his food. The funny thing is that I had this bag of special urinary tract food that my cats wouldn’t eat. I thought, oh Tiger will eat that but he hated it too. Even if you are hungry don’t accept just anything that gets thrown your way.

Do you know who you are?

Attached is a picture of one of my client’s cats – Mica. As you can see, Mica is extremely comfortable with the two dogs and sleeps every night with them. She thinks she’s a dog. This is because she came in the house at the same time as the dogs and never learned anything different. Her owners never tried to change her mind.

The lesson we can all take away is that you are what you think you are. People poo-poo the power of positive thinking and the power of words. They shun the adage “fake it until you make it” but studies have proven that it works. No matter what is going on in your life right now, smile especially if you don’t feel like smiling. If you aren’t feeling beautiful wake up every morning and look yourself in the mirror and say “I’m gorgeous dahling.” If you aren’t feeling like you are enough, write down three times a day “I am enough just as I am.” Words, written and verbal, have power.

Changing your thinking requires a significant amount of resources in the short-term and then, just like a car, periodic check-ins and tune-ups. The reason that this works is because of Cognitive dissonance. This is a proven psychological principal. It can be used for good or for bad (for example to get people to do things that seem horrific, but let’s not dwell on that).

Where do you want to be? I was telling a friend you should dream big, but plan small. That means that you should have big lofty goals, but the way to get there isn’t to make huge changes. Start with something small. Remember the journey of a 1,000 miles really does begin with one step. And then another, and another and then you’ve gone your 1,000 miles.

Mica is a physically a cat, but she can roll in a dog’s world. Let us know what world you want to roll in and how you are going to get there. Put your dreams out there in the universe.

Oh The Humanity

The internet is a wonderful invention. It has improved human life and the quality of life in literally trillions of ways. However, in everything that’s good there must be some bad. The internet allows people to hide anonymously and lose their humanity. Comments that are completely devoid of compassion, empathy, human feeling are made by mothers, fathers, doctors, policemen and others who in day to day contact would never say that to someone’s face. They bully people, beat up on rape victims. In fact Law & Order did an episode where an online “social justice mob” lead to murder. We’ve seen instances of suicides where people have been pushed over the edge. We’ve seen countless instances of how the internet can be used to bring out the worst in humanity.

The internet turns cowards into heros. On the internet there are far more sites dedicated to catching humanity at its worst than to celebrate the wonderful things that occur daily in our lives.

But, we have the power to change that.

With the cats, they do bad things but we forgive them. If they could type, would Jean-Claude post snarky comments on a site about how his mom didn’t give him wet food for two days? Would Roxie post some message about how her Grandma leaves her during the day and she has to sleep on the bed alone?

No, they wouldn’t. They would recognize that they are blessed beyond measure. Today, I will celebrate something good I see in someone and cast aside the negative. It’s easier to be negative than to be positive. Being positive requires more thought, more discipline but once you start thinking the good, you’ll find that it’s easier. Positivity pushes out negativity. Positivity will act as a barrier that negativity can’t cross. The thing about negativity is that it brings you down, but by doing something for someone else. Being kind, celebrating goodness we can counterbalances what’s out there bombarding us.

Sharing

So if you’ve been reading this blog then you know that there is an orange cat that hangs out at my house that runs with Jean-Claude. the other night, I saw this cat watching me from my neighbor’s porch, so I decided to feed it. The cat knows that I’m somewhat friendly but still somewhat tepidly approached my porch. In the end, the cat devoured the can of food I put outside, but didn’t want to take the water.

There are actually two orange cats that hang outside of my house. One is a longhaired cat and the other is a short-haired cat. The short-haired orange cat actually ran into my house once when I was taking out the trash.
