Remembering Shaby

Posted on

Pets add so much to our lives.  My friend Dwayne, recently lost his beloved dog “Shaby.”   I was moved by his Facebook remembrance  to his furry friend and got his permission to post it to  this blog.  Here’s Dwayne’s moving tribute to “Shaby.”

“Many of you have asked about ” Shaby” over the past few years. My family, friends and colleagues have all known him for the past 18 years. He was always present making someone laugh or smile. Last night, the little champ slept away to Heaven. Six rewards, pet amber alerts, 20 or more lost and found ads, a private detective and lawyers to get him back from his various adventures into the neighborhoods in Atlanta, NYC, NJ and Houston, he always found his way back to the Ashley Family. Like most of us, Shaby was curious about the world and wanted to see it–so he explored. Mom, thanks for taking great care of him for the past 4 years, and years before when I came for visits and he ended staying for months to years. And to all my friends who took care him when I had to travel over the years ( Cisco, Kurt, Leon, Gerald, Phillip, Martha and Andy). We will miss you little fella and “don’t embarrass me by begging for food when people are eating in Heaven”

The Peephole

Jean Claude, the Bombay and Koko, the shorthair like to watch the world from the windows in my house. Many times Jean Cllaude pats the blinds with his paw to let me know to raise them, yesterday however he and Koko created a peephole in the living room window..

The Garage: Standoff

Posted on

Monday, I decided to do some gardening while Jean Claude, the black Bombay cat and Koko, the domestic shorthair cat,  roamed the backyard.   I left the garage door open.  Mistake.  While Koko and Jean Claude are fascinated by nature they like the dark and hidden places that still exist behind boxes and other items stored in the garage.  After a romp in the yard  they go there.  This time they went inside and they wouldn’t come out.   I decided to do some raking which I did for several minutes, returned to the now closed (and locked)  garage.  The cats  still chose to remain hidden and unreachable, despite the fact that food, treats, water and warmth were awaiting them in the house.   So  I let them stay there for awhile, in the darkness while I read,  did some work and watched a little television.   After a long whle I went back to the garage where the animals  were eager to come inside to the warmth, food and treats awaiting them.  Jean Claude and Koko understood their survival meant playtime in the darkness had to end.  Unfortunately  many politicians in Washington  feel that their hatred of certain policies  and certain  people who don’t think or look like they do  is justification to turn off the lights for the whole world.   The government shutdown has ended and the debt ceiling lifted but some members of the GOP  want to stay inside the garage.  Maybe they should take a lesson from Jean Claude and Koko.
