Find Peace

Posted on

CCL and I had a marvelous time at the Prince “Rally4Peace” concert in Baltimore.  There’s been a lot of talk about peace.   The events in Baltimore – no justice no peace.  The call for peace.   Yes, social justice must come.  Peace must come.    For us all the struggle for inner peace is also challenging.  To live fully,  we must find it within ourselves on a daily basis.  It does not come naturally or easily and it is often hard fought.  I believe inner peace comes for sure through a connection with God and a connection with yourself.  Yes,  as you own yourself you will find the elusive peace.

I am the ultimate “Prince” fan but for this blog Sashal Vansandi’s song “No More” speaks to owning yourself and finding your peace.

The Real Thing

Koko, the celebrity cat and Jean Claude, the black Bombay,  are back at their primary residence at CCL’s in Washington, D.C.  Koko  enjoyed her stay at my house.  Several nights she left me a little surprise, a toy mouse,  which faced  me at the door to my bedroom.  Later she would  remove it to play with it during the day.    The mouse  looked very real but it didn’t frighten me ,as a gardener I’m not afraid of bugs etc.  In fact,  I found Koko’s intent  to amuse and please me genuine and touching.

Authenticity  and being “who you are” is  the latest personal elevation trend.   Life coaches and other success gurus  are constantly urging people to be their “authentic selves.”  Yes, “keeping it real ” is the so-called new path to personal and professional success.    Alas,  for some the notion of being geniune is beyond their grasp.  There are a lot of phonies who seek to  impress or manipulate.   Their fear of who they are has engulfed their souls. For them “keeping it real” is  about as real as the toy mouse Koko presented to me in the morning.

Viola and The Chicken (A Tribute to My Grandma Me-Me)

Posted on

(Here’s a post from April 2010 about my Grandmother, Viola “Bush” Doggett

Truth, we didn’t call my father’s mother Grandma or Grandmama.  Her name was Viola but us grandkids called her” Me-Me” and her husband William H., “Pop”.   Me-Me was an amazing woman.  She was very tall and beautiful.  My daughter,  Catz aka CCL,  looks like her.  Me-Me raised my dad and his siblings with a tough hand in a predominately white neighborhood in Steubenville , Ohio, an interesting neighborhood choice for an African-American family in the 1920s.   You see, my great-grandfather  owned three houses in the neighborhood and gave one to his oldest son my grandfather,  “Pop. ”  Viola also desegregated a hotel in downtown Steubenville by staging a one-woman sit-in in the lobby at  the local hotel which had refused (up until the sit-in)  to let African-Americans enter through the front door.   Me-Me  could cook too. Thought about her today while making chicken which brings me to the story about her and a rather unique family pet.

Here’s the story:  my father (Bob) and his four siblings (Vivian, Janet, Delores and Harvey) and my Uncle John (Pop’s younger brother who was  the same age as my dad), well, ok you get the drift…lots of kids…and a pet chicken.  The chicken would prod and cluck and perform  about for the children.  However,  the chicken didn’t like Me-Me — to the point of  even hissing or whisping at her.   One day Me-Me went in the yard and the chicken pecked her  – and then —  it vanished.  To this day the chicken’s actual fate remains a mystery.   My aunt Vivian often  said  “I don’t know what happened to the pet chicken but I do know we had chicken stew for dinner the night it disappeared.”
