Do you know who you are?

Attached is a picture of one of my client’s cats – Mica. As you can see, Mica is extremely comfortable with the two dogs and sleeps every night with them. She thinks she’s a dog. This is because she came in the house at the same time as the dogs and never learned anything different. Her owners never tried to change her mind.

The lesson we can all take away is that you are what you think you are. People poo-poo the power of positive thinking and the power of words. They shun the adage “fake it until you make it” but studies have proven that it works. No matter what is going on in your life right now, smile especially if you don’t feel like smiling. If you aren’t feeling beautiful wake up every morning and look yourself in the mirror and say “I’m gorgeous dahling.” If you aren’t feeling like you are enough, write down three times a day “I am enough just as I am.” Words, written and verbal, have power.

Changing your thinking requires a significant amount of resources in the short-term and then, just like a car, periodic check-ins and tune-ups. The reason that this works is because of Cognitive dissonance. This is a proven psychological principal. It can be used for good or for bad (for example to get people to do things that seem horrific, but let’s not dwell on that).

Where do you want to be? I was telling a friend you should dream big, but plan small. That means that you should have big lofty goals, but the way to get there isn’t to make huge changes. Start with something small. Remember the journey of a 1,000 miles really does begin with one step. And then another, and another and then you’ve gone your 1,000 miles.

Mica is a physically a cat, but she can roll in a dog’s world. Let us know what world you want to roll in and how you are going to get there. Put your dreams out there in the universe.

Boys and Their Toys

I just found out my nephew Evan, just over one year old, is starting to walk. Evan likes to dance, so does Roxie, she loves music of all kinds. Evan like his “cousin” Jean Claude also likes to make noise. Give Evan a spoon and a pan and sit him in the middle of the floor and bang – bang/pop pop. Recently I’ve had a few deliveries…this has meant empty boxes much to Jean Claude’s delight and while he can’t quite manage a spoon he does love the sound of the box as he pounds against it with his paws.

All They Need is the Tartar Sauce

One of my wonderful co-workers and her husband have three furry creatures…and now also an aquarium full of fish. She sent this photo along with the caption “All they need is the tartar sauce.”

A Time of Growth and Renewal

Jean Claude is sitting at my back porch steps after some early morning conversation with my neighbor Bonnie’s dog “Six” and another dog across the alley. 7:30 am in the morning. Kind of loud Spring is his favorite time of the year it seems.

Safety Concerns

Roxie, the Japanese bobtail, and Jean Claude, the black Bombay, spent part of their morning this morning poised on top of a chair looking through my front living room window. They still are not that comfortable in their usual morning spot at my bedroom window. I think I’ve mentioned I have had some challenges lately with the roof over my bedroom ceiling. A roof blowback, then collapse. A tarp has been placed over the roof and it rained heavily last night. I could hear the splatter and I was afraid. Still as if to comfort me Roxie sat in her spot which is just below the hole in the ceiling where the ceiling caved. By the way before the tarp was placed on the roof, Roxie wouldn’t go near her spot. She would look at me and then look at the hole and look at me and look at the hole and walk away. She senses the tarp and it brings her comfort. There’s been a lot of rain and wind lately. Folks in my neighborhood have seen trees and roofs collapse. Lots of repairs, lots of roofers.

I think about wind, rain and roof issues and the people of Japan. Their bravery, their steadfastness – inspire. Their visible grief – heartbreaking. Prayers of safety and restoration to the people of Japan. May God provide them a tarp of safety, blessings and peace.
