Because I got high…

So many of you know that we let Jean-Claude and occasionally Roxie roam our respective backyards. Jean-Claude now demands to be let out and even knows that the sound of the trash bag being changed usually means the door opens. We usually let JC out more than Roxie b/c JC will actually come back when called and although he can be naughty at times, will generally come back within an hour. He can even knock on the door. Roxie, well, Roxie is special and that is why we love h At times, JC can be, shall we say insistent, that he be allowed out. At my house I’ve seen even more of that behavior and I think I understand why.

JC is an addict and needs to get his buzz on.

I’m a container gardener and in one of those containers, I’ve been growing catnip. For the longest time, JC was completely uninterested in it. However, there were several neighborhood cats that would hop the fence and munch on my stash. Due to the rash of warm weather that we’ve been having, I’ve been letting him run the yard. For awhile, because my gate was broken, he could easily explore and roam the neighborhood, but he would always come back when called. Then after the gate, his explorations were limited the 120 sq I have or so.

Then I crushed up a leaf of fresh catnip from my container. JC loved it. He went over to the plant and started munching. Then roaming, then munching, then roaming, then munching. He loves it. For those that don’t know, catnip really does give cats a buzz. Afterwards, he did what I call the catnip roll when they have the good buzz and rolled on the walkway.

I’ve given the cats dried catnip, but this is the first time I’ve seen either one of them eat it fresh. JC then proceeded to climb the tree in my yard where he watched the world for a bit. Then he went back to the catnip and had some more!

When I left him this morning, he settled in for a long nap. He had thoroughly cleaned himself, positioned himself just so on the bed. Sweet dreams JC!

New and Different

Roxie and Jean Claude seem to finally be getting settled at CCL’s house. It has been a tough transition for me and for Roxie I suspect who still gives me looks of longing whenever I visit her at CCL’s house.   But everything must change and if we allow it things  change for the better.  It’s a balancing act really – I heard an inspirational message “Don’t let your past determine your future – press on.”  Certainly  we’ve all faced some challenges in 2011 but we are blessed that 2012 is here.  Me, I’m looking forward to visiting Roxie and Jean Claude often.

Christmas and the Grape

Clearly Jean Claude and Roxie are fascinated by the Christmas  tree in my living room. They’ve spent endless hours just watching it. Years ago they used to knock the tree down but now their play in the living room and dining room centers around removing the colorfully wrapped candy pieces out of the Christmas bowls and batting the pieces around on the floor . JC is particularly found of playing with the foiled wrapped candy as well as a grape I must of dropped when I was getting food out of the refrigerator.   The grape has moved from under a dining room chair to under my living room couch – I guess so it can get a better view of the Christmas tree too!!

Roxie’s Laser Toy is Lost – Again

Roxie, the Japanese bobtail, is frisky . She needs lots of attention and lots of play- or else.  We are at the “or else “stage right now. That’s right folks, Roxie’s current laser toy is missing.  I’ve looked everywhere for it and Madame is not pleased.  Between that and having to give her meds daily…well it can be overwhelming.   You may think that perhaps, Jean Claude, the black bombay, in a fit of jealousy hid the toy.   No, JC is really quite sweet especially after his morning constituional.  Today it was raining quite a bit but he went outside anyway and spent time sitting on the lawn meditating under the giant tree in my back yard.  Later he came back inside  the house slightly wet and retreated to one his “spots” under the chair in my sitting room. Roxie, well, she’s Roxie.

Here’s a tribute to the rain and JC and Roxie – one of the funniest break up songs ever ..Oran Juice’s Original “I Saw You Walking in the Rain.”

Summer Favorites

Roxie and Jean Claude, while primarily housecats, enjoy the outdoors. Well, Roxie not so much , although she likes sitting on the back porch steps or peering out the open windows to check out what’s going on. She will on ocassion come to supervise my work in the garden or to let “Rocky” the urban squirrel know that he is not to climb the huge pine tree in my backyard.
